Providing Walker Steps
Helen is 81 years and couldn't get out of her houseusing her walker because of the steep front steps. connections built a 6'x6' porch deck flush with the front door threshold, and then built four, 2' wide walker-steps leading down to the driveway. The volunteer labor came from a group of 9 MSU students who built the steps one Saturday last fall. For a total cost of $550 (which includes materials and contractor's fees) you can help us and our volunteers build a set of walker steps just like this one! - I came to Connections with 30+ years of contracting experience. Because it took me ahwile to learn how to build things, I knew that volunteers wouldn't know how to build a ramp or set of walker-steps when they arrived at a work site. From the start, I made sure that each group/project had an on-site contractor. I can go look at any one of the 75+ structures that these groups have built for us over the last three years and see a rock solid, fully functional ramp or set of walker-steps that still provide the client with the kind of access that helps them continue to live in the peace and safety of their own home. This is the blessing of grace that comes from one helping another.
